Alright so I'm not talking about the radcore John Carpenter film 'They Live' but the first LP of the talented Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka. Never heard of them? That's ok not many people have. Besides a few things they've done apart they have only ever released a double single on Monkeytown side label 50 Weapons.

It was double single Creeper/Infamous that shone a light on minimal swelling techno. With a gorgeous production weight and depth these tracks got so deep inside you that you could almost shit them out. 

Their first LP was insistantly insisted by Modeslektor after they heard Creeper. They flew them to Berlin to make the album and it will be released today (01/27/2012).

Congress shelves SOPA. The internet wins.

So what did congress really think was going to happen when they proposed restricting peoples freedom online. The backlash it incited on the internet wasn't just limited to the country that the new laws would have affected and so a world wide cry rang out, stop SOPA now before it fucks up my illegal downloading practices. I think companies should learn from this, as H2ouse has previously mentioned, most 'pirates' would be happy to pay a fee for the service/ability to download new shows on demand instead of waiting 6 months for them to air on T.V. nestled snuggly between ads for products we neither want nor give a flying fuck about. One of the main things that annoys me is that in the states there are services that almost do this, Hulu for example, but to all the rest of us living outside of the land of the "free" we are stuck with delayed schedules. Take for instance The Muppets, released in the USA on thanksgiving, which if I'm not mistaken is the last thursday of november, whereas we here in australia didn't get a chance to see it till january 12th.
So with that in mind, until companies start to figure out how to provide better services to us the internet generation, SOPA will never be able to find a foothold. Which is why it comes as no surprise the Congress has officially shelved the act for now.

We've seen plenty of completely stupid, unnecessary & overpriced gadgets at this years CES,
none more so than this fucking stupid thing.

But Dave, why is this stupid?

I'll tell you.
because it's still twice the resolution that even the highest resolution cinema cameras are capable of capturing.
congratulations Sharp, you built a TV that is only running at 50% capacity.
you fucking mongs. At this point in time, the TV & Home Cinema market will not expand past 2K for a very long while given the investments in standardising HD (anything between 720 and 1080).
We all knew that one could be made if someone wanted to, christ, we saw 4K monitors at CES a few years ago - only a handful got sold, but we got the message - realising that the sky was the limit.

But Dave, what about RED's rumoured 27K & 32K cameras?
The sole reason for shooting at a resolution higher than true 4K is for visual effects.... or there's not enough money in the budget for more than one lens. Even so, the final cut will always be exported at a more manageable resolution. 1080 & 2K will dominate the home market & 4K will dominate the cinema market. Not to mention the fact that the human eye is incapable of detecting resolutions upwards of 4K on a standard 50" panel.
This panel might have a niche market in post production houses or photoshop suites with more dollars than sense, but it's not likely.

The next major development we're going to see in cinema is the standardised upgrade from 24fps to 48fps, which initially I was 100% against, but now Kodak is well and truly heading down the shitter and 35mm prints are no longer gracing projection booths with their presence - I'm all for it, in fact, I can't wait.
Of course, 48fps will still fall well within the 50 or 60 Hertz that most monitors & projectors can run at, so the migration on the consumers end will be seamless.

Main point; Sharp, congratulations for continuing to make shitty TVs that nobody will buy.

I met Scoot (Scott Mellis) when i was the pubeless age of four. I grew up with two sisters and he was really the sibling i never had with a penis. His first band 'Pool-Shark' (named after a Sublime track) first played in my garage with gathering neighbours and shitty side acts. It went down well but it really didn't touch the surface of what was to come from Scott.

Now and for quite some time he's been a man/boy-man guitar act. It's a tough battle to be recognised from every other one man act out there. But this is what Scoot lives for and I really think he's starting to find an identity as an artist/musician/hat-wearer.

In a country where the domineering president controls the media and the people are force-fed mass produced commercial bullshit for music (I am talking about the Republic of Korea [South Korea] and surprisingly not it's northern cousin [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] although there are striking similarities at times), it's great to see some talented musical acts actually getting noticed and god forbid pulling a reasonable audience/fan base.

I speak of Idiotape (이디오테잎), a Seoul based band who have recently (through VU entertainment) been pulling large crowds supporting huge artists with their blend of high-voltage, electronic shoegaze that gets the kids jumping. I first saw/discovered Idiotape at the 2010 Global Gathering, shortly after my arrival in Korea. On new years eve I watched them open for none other than Ed Banger heavyweights Feadz and SebastiAn. While their set was cut short due to a timing issue, they still got everyone warmed up for what was a wild evening. Earlier in the year, again at GGK, they packed the Blue Spirit stage to capacity and shattered the minds of crazed Koreans and foreigners alike. And as I prepare for to witness them bust out tunes off their very cool record 11111101 this weekend at the Seoul Electronic Music Festival (SEMF), supporting some french guys called Justice and this other little known group, Crystal Castles or palaces or forts or something, I am confident that they will again be as tight and professional as they have been on all previous occasions, delivering a sound that is unique in a land where the soundscape is rigorously dictated by the way the singer's look rather than sound.



This is a Korean band truly worth of international exposure. I hope that the groups they've played with recently will be testament to their quality and they will grow to some foreign acclaim.

How Kodak Died.

What a sad day.

Kodak announced over night that they would be filing for bankruptcy in the coming weeks if they fail to sell off their patents (worth in excess of US$2billion) or convince some rich dudes that film will bounce back and get a US$1billion bail out.

This just proves what we all expected - the desperate attempts that Kodak was making to put to bed the rumours that they were in dire straights was just a last ditch effort to prevent shareholders from jumping ship.

Castle Awesome reported on Kodaks defiance and blind optimism in the face of a corporate apocalypse, back in November of last year (HERE) - where Kim Snyder, Vice President of Kodak denied stories of a struggling century old film company by reassuring people that they weren't going anywhere.

There's not much more to say here, this horrible situation speaks for itself.

Our heritage, and still the undeniable king of image accusation will soon be laying on the cutting room floor. Replaced by CMOS CCDs, HDDs & SSDs.

This is how film dies. We're watching it happen right before our eyes.

Of course, all of this comes straight off the back of film distributers, major studios & cinemas announcing that they had put aside their long standing differences regarding an-across-the-board migration to digital cinema and will proceed with plans to phase out distribution of motion pictures on 35mm film and will adopt a standardised digital projection system (of which Christie, IMAX & Kodak are involved) which will consist of distributers providing cinemas with a HDD containing a 2K or 4K copy of the film - and professional projectionists plugging in the hard drive, turning on the projector & pressing play.

It's all a bit insulting.

Eric as (Blaise/Chuck) in the 2007 film Steak by Quentin Dupieux.
