Red Tails Trailer. Finally!

#redtails @starwars #lucasfilm

The trailer for the much talked about and long overdue Red Tails is finally here. Lucas has been talking about this since making the lacklustre Star Wars prequels and we'll finally see it at the start of next year.

It's oh so strange to see the Lucasfilm logo attached to something not Star Wars (0.36 minutes into the trailer). Is it just me or do the dog fights look like a scene out of a space battle in the Prequels? It definitely looks and feels like the creamy effects of Lucas and some of the shots look a little yuck. BUT! This should be an emotional, compelling story with the likes of Anthony Hemingway (directed a butt load of 'The Wire' episodes) directing it.  Perhaps Lucas has finally realised he really isn't great at getting the most/least out of actors and has rightfully passed over the reigns this time.

Anyhow you should be excited for this as it's Lucasfilm that isn't in a Galaxy far far away (Star Wars), about a humanoid duck (Howard the Duck), a midget magician (Willow) or another Indiana Jones film.

The dogfights look great none the less and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) has squeezed himself into another feature film (he currently has 8 in production).

Here are some production stills. Good to see full size planes in use even if they are against green screen.

If you haven't already please read Brooksbot's insightful post on Red Tails here.

CONFIRMED: iPhone 5 release second week of September

#iphone5 #apple

According to a reliable source, the iPhone 5 will be released on the second week of September. The source also says that the iPad 3 will be released later than that but still at some point this year.

Castle Awesome has been criticised previously for not releasing our sources, so here it is, hot off the press over at the China Times.

Simpsons DEXTER parody for Halloween Special XXII

#Simpsons #DEXTER

So as much as I like this, and it made me smile, I have little to no faith in anymore Simpsons Halloween Specials. For at least the last 3 years, they have been absolutely terrible. I guess I've grown out of the Simpsons, although I can't say the same about high school girls.

What the Smurf?

#Smurfs #3D

The new Smurfs film has been on everyones radar for a very long time. Actually, here at Castle Awesome when we first stumbled across some concept art early last year we got pretty excited.
The film boasts a strange mix of talent that will hopefully find a healthy balance between the novelty of of a pop-superstar like Katy Perry who is lending her voice to Smurfette in contrast with the brilliance of Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria as Gargamel.

The film has had a number of low profile preview screenings that have been open to the public - and from all accounts it is a pretty solid film.
One IMDb user posted a review saying:

"I was mightily impressed, Incredible 3D, it had a very good storyline that appeals to both young and old. Great voice casting that includes Katy Perry who even sang I kissed a smurf and I liked it!, funny jokes, good references to the old series. I wasn't expecting much , but a lot of time and effort has gone into the detail on this film, i guess that is why it took so long to get to the cinema"

On this note of 3D, i've had a sneaky look at some behind the scenes photos and I have to say I'm very disappointed.
The cameras you see in the photos below are a Panavision Genesis. Long regarded as the Rolls Royce of HD cinema cameras since they're first film Superman Returns shot here on the Gold Coast.
A beautiful camera they are, but a stereoscopic camera they are not. meaning that you should save your pennies and see this film on a nice 35mm film print because all of the 3D was done inside a computer many months after the actual film shoot.
I'm disappointed in the technology and i'm not particularly impressed with the production stills i've seen showing the Smurfs in the real world. But the only true test is to see the film for yourself.

The Smurfs hits cinemas on the 8th of September here in Australia.

Time Travel

#TimeTravel #BackToTheFuture #FluxCapacitor #ShatteredDreams

Yesterday, apparently, Scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science managed to disprove time travel by conducting experiments which involved accelerating photons to their maximum speed, which according to their results is not the speed of light.
I've had a hard time finding exactly what their experiments entailed so we will have to wait and see, but their results are pretty much on par with Einstein's theory of relativity.

"By showing that single photons cannot travel faster than the speed of light, our results bring a closure to the debate on the true speed of information carried by a single photon," said the research team leader Du Shengwang, assistant professor of physics.

"Our findings will also likely have potential applications by giving scientists a better picture on the transmission of quantum information."

If you have any interest in the physics involved with and the theories surrounding time travel and traveling at the speed of light, I highly recomend you read Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time","A Briefer History of Time" & "The Universe in a Nutshell" (links below)
you can also download these as audiobooks from iTunes (no Stephen Hawking doesn't read it himself...unfortunately)

Whilst this whole 'time travel is impossible' business is a total bummer, i guess if there is a silver lining, it is that this all means that scientists can stop working on silly time travel and start working on hoverboards.

Funny or Die got milk

#FunnyOrDie #GotMilk

Not to be outdone, FunnyOrDie.com released their own versions of the Got Milk ad campaign.
they're pretty offensive.

enjoy.

Bitches be crazy

#BitchesBeCrazy #AdsMadeByMen

I heard about this new controversial ad campaign about milk a couple of weeks ago, saw a couple of the ads and giggled and how chauvinistic and pig headed they are - but I didn't really pay much attention to them.

that was....until i had some more of the ads emailed to me this morning and paid closer attention to the text, and read that "Milk can reduce the symptoms of PMS" - and I was like WHHHAAATT???!!!
why did i not know this? it's amazing.

so here are the ads that have feminist groups all pissed off and crabby.

Prometheus. Start getting excited.

#prometheus @mfonline #alien

Ridley Scott is back to Science fiction after over two decades away from the genre. Prometheus first regarded as an 'Alien prequel' is now just 'set in the alien universe' after Damon Lindelof (Lost) rewrote the original script. So what is it about? Fox released this in the last few days and it really doesn't tell us much

"Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery"

SO WHAT THE HELL IS IT ABOUT!?!?!?!

Ok so I've come to the conclusion that Prometheus is going to be about the race of Alien we find dead in the derelict spaceship in the first/best Alien film. I've heard stories this elephant faced race used the xenomorphs to take over worlds.

Obviously using Xenomorphs to your advantage can/will backfire.

I found this on Alien Species Wiki

"Aliens director James Cameron also called the creature the "Big Dental Patient". These large elephant-creatures may be the first victims of the Xenomorphs (also seen in the Alien series) and perhaps also their creators. Their discovery was made in the first Alien movie, when the commercial starship Nostromo set down on the unsurveyed moon LV-426 in response to a signal interpreted as a distress call. The crew found a wrecked derelict spacecraft with a dead lifeform inside, apparently its "pilot". No other remains were found, and they are not referred to in the other films of the series".

Watch the below clip of Ridley discussing Prometheus via satellite at this years Comic Con.

I love the fact that all the ship interiors and a lot of the sets were actually built and not just shot against green screen. Ridley has obviously been impressed by what he can do with 3D and swears to never shoot 2D again. He's joined the Zemeckis Express. Get it? Robert Zemeckis swears by 3D, made the Polar Express, hopped on the train that is exclusive 3D film makers. I fucking hate myself. Anyway let's dot point why you should be excited.

  • Ridley Scott returning to Sci fi
  • Set in the Alien universe
  • Michael Fassbender
  • Androids
  • Earth is finally seen in the Alien Universe
  • We discover more about the alien race (Mala'kak AKA Space Jockeys) found in the derelict spaceship in the original film
  • Ridley Scott returning to Sci Fi
  • It's rumoured Charlize Theron will be doing naked pushups in the film
  • A lot of the film will be physically created and not in a puter (computer)
  • It's being shot in 3D. No 3D in post! (effing hate post 3D!)
  • Ridley Scott (Bladerunner, Alien) returning to Sci Fi

This is the only still released so far. Now ponder on what the hell we're looking at.

If you aren't excited by this then you should probably watch 'Alien' again on the newly, maginficently remastered blu ray edition. Also Aliens. Aliens rocks! Buy below.

The Walking Dead Season 2 Trailer.

#thewalkingdeadseasontwo #comiccon #SDCC

10 Hours ago, people at San Diego Comic-con were given a glimpse of the second season of The Walking Dead.

Wow, I am pumped for the new season. I've been led to believe that this next season follows the story arc of the first 30 or so comics and luckily this time we get 13 episodes instead of the measly 6 from last year. I can't help but feel that they probably spoiled a few suspenseful moments there in the scene with the highway. But as usual, the make up and cinematography looks superb.

Sarah Palin is Undefeated

#SarahPalin #RottenTomatoes #TheUndefeated

As my favourite fratboy, Philip DeFranco, once said "I love Sarah Palin because she's technically not retarded so it's still okay that I make fun of her"

Her new film entitled "The Undefeated" has managed to do something quite remarkable.
Yes, I had to do a double take as well when I first saw it, but Palin's film has upheld a Rotten Tomatoes rating of a staggering 0%

The Documentary which tells the story of Palin's pre-political life of doing redneck stuff and being ignorant with lots of money in Alaska aka The South of the North

Now i really want so see this movie and bask in just how much of the cashed-up and surprisingly uneducated redneck she really is.

Netflix Australia

#Netflix #NetflixAustralia #NBN

Netflix confirmed rumours earlier this week that they were looking to expand into Australia and cement themselves a market-share ahead of the National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout.
Netflix has been around for more than a decade, and it is the worlds leading online, on-demand streaming service for Movies & TV Shows, where subscribers pay a small monthly fee and have access to more than 100,000 (as of 2009, most likely a shitload more now) titles.

Currently Netflix boasts more than 23million subscribers across the US & Canada - and it has announced incremental expansions into Europe starting in 2012.
Netflix obviously wanting to capitalise on the infrastructure that Australians will have in the near future - a government funded nation-wide roll out of a fibre-optic & satellite network which means kick ass speeds.
Now, so long as the nations ISP's don't band together and continue to overcharge for internet - the money you'll save from no longer throwing money into that financial black hole that is Foxtel Cable & Satellite TV you could upgrade to an unlimited internet plan - because with break-neck speed internet you'll need it.

....or you could just be a cunt and continue to torrent, which if regional broadcasting restrictions continue (eg. In Australia we don't get a new season of Dexter for about 3 months after it's aired in the US & Canada, even on cable TV) or the Australian TV networks continue to be cheapskates and opt for shit TV shows like the new season of The Cleveland Show instead of good programming like the new season of The Walking Dead - you bet your ass i'm going to torrent the shows i want to watch. I'll always go out and buy or rent them on DVD or BluRay as a way of giving something back and ensuring that good things are rewarded - but if you think that in the 21st century I'm going to sit on my hands until it's convenient for a broadcaster to finally let me see a show that I want to watch? give yourself an uppercut.

Netflix in Australia has great potential to snuff out piracy if it's managed correctly - and make the networks think long and hard about their programming and how many shitty life insurance ads they choose to cram in between.

Dexter: EJO and Hanks as villains, Mos Def to play black guy

@edwardjolmos @mosdefofficial #Dexter

So here is the first look at Dexter Season 6. I'm getting a christ vibe from all of this, and I suspect Edward James Olmos plays a crazy evangelist type, come to teach Michael C. Hall that having sex with your on-screen sister, is still kinda weird, even if it isn't illegal.

Here is the trailer...

iPhone Auto-correct in OSX Lion, bad idea?

#OSXLion #OSX #APPLE #iPhone

I know I know, you can turn it off, so if you use your Mac for work, maybe that would be a good idea. The last thing you want is to lose your job because of something inappropriate you say to a client.

Or you could be like me and use it to your advantage when I send my boss' hot wife dirty emails. I'm just going to blame auto-correct.

OSX Lion appearing problematic in early stages

#OSXLION #OSX #LION #FCPX

On the heels of a devastating release of Final Cut Pro X, Apple are well and truly in "make or break" territory. Lest we forget the trust this world had in one of the leading video software programmes before it became obsolete due to a high number of bad decisions. Therefore, you must understand why I will be so harsh on Apple today, during the release of "The most advanced operating system in the world".

I'm actually not going to get into the details of the system itself, as I'm sure that will be regurgitated among the masses in due course, but I will raise some issues that I personally think should've been on Apple's "to-do" list prior to this release.

I reported a few days ago, that OSX Lion would be available on the 20th of July, 8.30am EST, U.S. time (10.30pm my time, here in Australia). Magically all relevant websites in the U.S., include www.apple.com, updated thier pages to reveal Lion's official premiere. The Australian Apple website.. was slightly slower.

Which became obvious when trying to download the software.

I was taken back to the late 90's. I was 12 years old and listening to the most popular radio station at the time. Suddenly the radio station DJ asks the public to call into the station, and the 5th caller to get through, would win a CD (Compact Disc, which in the future, could be turned into mp3's). I rushed to get the phone, went to all the trouble of dialling the number and waited for the response. It was busy. I hung up, and hit redial. Still busy. I hung up again, and hit redial. STILL BUSY. I soon became a robot and simply pressed redial, hung up, pressed redial, hung up, pressed redial etc etc.

As was my initial OSX Lion experience. A message saying "App temporarily unavailable, Please try again later". Over, and Over, and Over again.

I honestly assumed there may of been some issue with availability, as if for some reason, the Macbook that was being used to upload the master copy of Lion to the web, froze up, like mine fucking does all the time.

But as some Australians reported on twitter, they were getting through. How? Keep on pressing that redial button.

Also, who the fuck releases the most advanced operating system, only available to DOWNLOAD, at the end of the month? I'm so closed to having my internet capped down to dial up, the 4GB Lion download would take me well and truly into next month.

I would double check the grammar on this post, but after the amount of time it took to write, my OSX Lion download is complete. Wish me luck, I'll no doubt post another scathing article soon.

Setting Up Google+

#googleplus #googlechrome #startgoogleplus #iOS

So Google+ has finally released their iOS app for all of you out there with iPhones/iPads.

You can grab it HERE.

I know one of the main reasons Google+ didn't appeal to me to start with was the fact that i would have to reload all my information/photos from facebook. Which could potentially take hours depending on how snap happy you are.
Well worry no more, a clever gentleman has developed an add on for Google Chrome that allows you to rip all your photos directly from facebook and import them to Google+ in their albums. All neatly sorted for you.

You can find StartgooglePlus here.
(You have to have Google Chrome as your browser for this to work. If you follow that link it will give you everything you need.)
